ABOUT TEMPLE SHALOM

Temple Shalom is an Egalitarian, Conservative Synagogue, located in Salem, Massachusetts part of Boston’s historic North Shore. The congregation is housed in a New England style building complete with a beautiful sanctuary, chapel, library, school annex, auditorium, multi-purpose room and kitchens. We belong to the North Shore Hebrew School Consortium and are very proud of our involvement both with North Shore Jewish institutions and interfaith groups. Originally established in 1898 as the Congregation Sons of Jacob, Temple Shalom is the oldest Synagogue on the North Shore. The temple is a member of the USCJ.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

The position is a permanent part-time 25 hour/week position. The pulpit spiritual leader will be expected to:

  1. Lead weekday, Friday and Saturday minyans, including reading Torah and Haftorah
  2. Lead High Holiday Services and all other Jewish Holiday Services
  3. Develop and expand membership, congregation, and community outreach.
  4. Participate in all congregant life cycle events, such as, Bar-Mitzvah/Bat-Mitzvah lessons, weddings, funerals, and other life events.
  5. Provide Counsel to congregants in need, including visiting the sick and dying
  6. Direct and provide teaching for our adult and youth education programs.
  7. Establish and maintain office hours.
  8. Assist in establishing a vision for the temple, and set up and achieve short and long term goals
  9. Take direction from, and work effectively with the lay leadership providing guidance and counsel.
  10. Continue to support and grow our long standing relationships and programs with:   
  • Other regional Rabbis/Spiritual Leaders
  • Federation
  • JRC
  • Lappin Foundation
  • JCC
  • JFS
  • Hebrew School
  • Jewish Journal 
  1. Continue to support and grow our:
  • Interfaith Initiatives
  • Israel Initiatives 

PERSONAL QUALITIES/SKILLS

We seek a candidate who has: 

  • Energy, is charismatic, and is a self-starter

  • Personal warmth, strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop rapport with all age groups

  • Strong teaching, counseling and public speaking skills

  •  Demonstrated leadership skills

QUALIFICATIONS

  • The candidate should have 2-5 years previous experience with a non-profit Jewish organization. 

  • Previous pulpit experience including rabbi, assistant rabbi, and/or cantor.

  • Candidate must be a member in good standing of the Rabbinical Assembly and/or Cantor Assembly.

  • The candidate must have administrative/management experience and good public speaking skills. 

  • The candidate must have the ability to connect and engage with people on a personal and genuine level.

  • The candidate must enjoy and be effective teaching both children and adults.

  • The candidate should be able to read Torah and can cantillate.
