The flute, one of the world's most ancient instruments, has played a major role in Jewish life throughout the ages. Used in the Temple in Jerusalem, at the coronation of King Solomon, or while bringing the harvest (Bikurim) to Jerusalem at Shavuot, it has been mentioned many times in the Bible.
A unique program, prepared specially for this season, will present a wide variety of instruments wearing "costumes", such as the clay recorders from Mexico, in Aztec costumes, Bamboo flutes from the Amazon jungles, and numerous instruments disguised in animal costumes. As a favor to his good friend Hazzan Idan, Flutist and music educator Amir Milstein will present a musical workshop, exposing the Jewish connections to these instruments and their music. A brief musical Havdalah with our own Hazzan Idan will follow.
During the encounter, a collection of over 70 different woodwind instruments from around the world is presented with folk tales, songs and familiar tunes along with a diverse repertoire of compositions from around the world. Amir will play various Purim songs, explain and demonstrate the sounds of each instrument, the reasons for their different shapes, and encourage the children to explore these beautiful instruments
